Welcome!

We are a group of 8th graders from Brooklyn Collaborative School (BCS), located in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, NY. We have just completed an Investigative Journalism Unit utilizing an area of our community as the focus. Students visited the Gowanus Canal, a polluted waterway blocks away from our school. Through observation, interviews, and research, students have created investigative news stories uncovering issues surrounding the Gowanus Canal. Each student investigated a different angle, either focusing on the environment, development, or the arts. These are their stories...

BCS visited the Gowanus canal and we saw a little bit of graffiti but not as much.I can tell that a lot of artists don’t  go the canal because it stinks very bad over there and there are a few dead rodents and maybe a few dead people. It's dirty because factories and people are throwing ink, garbage, and food. Although the canal is so dirty artistes decide to go at there at their own risk and some artists do not come out clean. They would either get out unclean, handcuffed or drown.
Modern graffiti appeared in the in P.A (Philadelphia in the 1960's and later in the 60's it finally came to N.Y.C. New art forms really took off in the mid 70's when people started designing their own names and tags on building everywhere. It was also on subways tunnels and on vehicles. In the mid 70's and it was hard to see out the subway train because were completely covered in graffiti markings A.K.A masterpieces. The term graffiti was used by the N.Y times.  Art galleries in NY began purchased graffiti in 70's but at the exact same time it began to be regarded as a form of art. The mayor of New York city declared the first war on graffiti. In the 80's it became difficult to write on train cars without the police catching them, so instead of doing in subway cars where there are people who can easily see them artistes got the habit of doing art designs on rooftops building and canvases.
To this day the debate on whether graffiti is art or vandalism is still happening. I'd say it's not vandalism because it’s art and art is not an illegal thing and some people don't see anything wrong with creative designs. people also don't see anything wrong with showing out amazing art if there can be art from chalk and coloring materials. artistes don’t see how people and government can take graffiti so offensively if it's just art from a bottle. Graffiti is legal only if they get permission by the law but otherwise it's a form of vandalism. People should not get arrested over art because art can be addictive and they are basically saying stop doing art.
