Welcome!

We are a group of 8th graders from Brooklyn Collaborative School (BCS), located in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, NY. We have just completed an Investigative Journalism Unit utilizing an area of our community as the focus. Students visited the Gowanus Canal, a polluted waterway blocks away from our school. Through observation, interviews, and research, students have created investigative news stories uncovering issues surrounding the Gowanus Canal. Each student investigated a different angle, either focusing on the environment, development, or the arts. These are their stories...

Pollution In The
Gowanus Canal
By Devin Angel Rivera

The  Polluted  Mess
Can  you  imagine  water  that changes  colors?  Because  in  the  Gowanus  Canal  in Brooklyn  NY  there  was  local  factories and ink factory's dumping and they polluted into the canal. So when they were making purple ink, the water would turn purple. Also  there  was  coal  yards  illegally  dumping  into  the  canal.  Also  the  reason  why  the  water  was  turning  colors  because  these  companies  were  dumping  garbage, mettle  and  especially  oil.

THE  START
How  could  this  have  happen? In  the  article (“scientific american”) it  stated    that  big  industry, cement  trucks  and  heavy  vehicles  and  shipwrecks” were dumping. According  to  L.L   it said that companies  were  importing  and exporting  good  in  the  canal  which  made  it  very  dirty  to  clean  up  since  it  was  constantly  getting  dirty.  This  was  happening  in  Brooklyn, New  York  in  the  park  slope  area  (Lavender  Lake).  This  was   happening  since  1972  when  the  clean  water  act people  promised  that the  canal  would be clean  by  then  because  in  the  (clean  water  act)   it  stated cleaning  the  canal  in  1972  would  stop  the  pollution.  This  started  happening  because  in  (epa) it  said  factories  dumped  pollution   in  the  gowanus  canal  because  no  one  was  there  to  tell  companies  not  to.

         BROOKLYN  BREAKDOWN
The  pollution  in  the  canal  matters  because local  neighborhoods  people  don't  have  interest!!!  in  going  to  visit  the  canal  because  it's  ugly  and stinks.  The  people  are impacted  by  this  problem  because  people  are  feeling  unhappy  because  they  feel  it's  a  disgrace  to  local  neighborhoods  by  the  canal.  Everyone  should  care  about  this  problem  because  we  have  companies  dumping  oil  and  garbage    into  something  that  could've  been  beautiful, but  now knows  as  the  most  polluted  water  in  the  united states.

FUTURE PLANS

Some  people  and  groups  are  trying  to  clean  up  the  Gowanus.  For   example  in  the  article  (A  Brief  History  Of  Slime)  it  stated  that  currently  in  some areas,a  foot  or  so  of  heavy  clay  might  be  laid  over  parts  of  the  canal's  bottom  ,sealing  in  the  all  the leftover  pollution  in  the  canal..  Another  good  idea is  to  clean  up  the  canal  and hire  lots  of  companies  to  help  clean.  This  would  be  a  good  plan  because  not  just  the  water  is  getting  clean  it's  getting  clean  fast. If we  fix  the  problem, our  future  would  be  that  more  and  more  people  would  be  able  to  enjoy  the  view  because  already  the  agency  plans  to  dig  up  hundreds  of  thousands  of  tons  of  muck  from  the  bottom  of  the  canal, and  then  incinerate  it,by 2022. If  we  was  to  fix  the  canal  there  could  be  good  things  for  the  community  to  enjoy  like  canoeing  in  the  river  and  grow beautiful  plants  on  the  outside.
