New Apartments, New Future
By: Anai Moreno
Imagine the sound of the birds chirping above the green trees placed at the Gowanus Canal. With the blue water streaming. And right next to it, big tall buildings where people will soon be able to live in. Eighth grade teacher, Arden Katine, took a group of 8th grade students to the Gowanus Canal on October 8th, in Brooklyn NY. On the trip, they spotted many construction workers form buildings. Their trip was filled with the smell of rubber mixed with the sightings of green bushes near the streaming water. In the end, this will become a place where a community will be formed. This will make the Gowanus Canal a livable space.
Upcoming Plans
The Gowanus Canal has upcoming plans creating new development such as apartments. Lightstone, a development company, are creating these new buildings so that rich people can move in and so that they can get more money. And according to the website, dnainfo.com, it states “Gowanus Green, a 774-unit eight-building development where 70% of the apartments will be affordable”. Buildings being renovated at Gowanus will be placed at a fair price for people who want to live there. Also, according to nytimes.com, it states “Construction is underway for several residential developments”. Gowanus will be filled with buildings where anyone can come and live, especially, in a place where many never wanted to go before.
“I don’t like change”
The Gowanus Canal wasn’t always a clean space. The Canal was so horrid that people didn’t even want to go near it. And now because of the new apartments being constructed, people might have even more complaints due to noise and and traffic caused. For example, 8th grade teacher, Arden Katine, says “ It will affect my commute. Prices at stores will go up. Because I lived in Brooklyn for so long, I don’t like change”. The construction will cause many delays throughout the streets. But in the end, it’ll be worth since you can walk by Gowanus and see many buildings along with having a amazing view to see as you either walk pass it or see it high and above from Smith-9 street train station.
Final look
So far, the new apartments are currently being built along with many green spaces making the Gowanus Canal a livable space. Now that more people would want to come to Gowanus to live there, it'll feel like a whole new world. Flyers can go up about the residential apartments so that it can grab people's attention. By letting people know about the new apartments, people would definitely wonder what it feels like to live in Gowanus, wouldn't you? The Gowanus Canal is turning into something extraordinary. It will turn into something no one would’ve ever thought can become. Here in Brooklyn, New York, change is being made. History is being made.
