Welcome!

We are a group of 8th graders from Brooklyn Collaborative School (BCS), located in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, NY. We have just completed an Investigative Journalism Unit utilizing an area of our community as the focus. Students visited the Gowanus Canal, a polluted waterway blocks away from our school. Through observation, interviews, and research, students have created investigative news stories uncovering issues surrounding the Gowanus Canal. Each student investigated a different angle, either focusing on the environment, development, or the arts. These are their stories...

Combined Sewage Overflow in Brooklyn, NY

Gowanus canal has been a problem in our community. like when it rains and all of the dirty water goes on the streets and into the Gowanus canal also the ST pieps overflows and it can't handle all of the dirty water so the ST pieps brakes.imagine you walking pass green dirty Water that smells like poop even tho water is supposed to be bules you not going to walk pass there never again.the Gowanus is located in brooklyn new york between red hook and Gowanus.
      How Does CSO Work?
First I want to tell you what is CSO combined sewage overflow its just dirty bathroom water that goes into the Gowanus canal. Combined sewage overflow also is a problem to nearby communities because nobody wants to walk pass green water that smells like poop that's just nasty! Combined sewage overflow in the canal comes from other pipes around Brooklyn nearby house projects. According to “_Dear cityLab ” by _Vicky Gan, When it rains in New York City raw sewage bypasses treatment plants and flows directly into city's waterways.one reason why people think that the Gowanus canal got so polluted because people back in the days uses to throw things in the Gowanus canal. people use to think that the Gowanus Canal was a garbage bag!! but wait it wasn't only garbage people got thrown in the canal to.
People should care about CSO because… it's not only one way people can get sick by drinking the water even if you smell the water it can effect you still.according to “Dear CityLab “by “Vicky Gan”,  it says that cso are not just gross they also pose a significant risk to human health polluted runoff can contaminate drinking water and spread waterborne.

In addition, Vicky Gan also write that: “people that effected by cso infrastructure like rain gardens bioswales and green roofs to reduce stormwater runoff.” also the people who live nearby the Gowanus canal there bathroom pieps lead to the gowanus canal ST pieps and then when all of that dirty water overflows the ST pieps can handle all of that dirty water so it breaks.this was in “1961 when they had made a 6200-foot underground tunnel fitted with a seven foot propeller was open to flush all of the seawater down. around 1961 when the pump broke”. This shows that_this pieces of evidence shows that when the propeller didn't break all of the Dirty water wasn't affecting anyone back then. But now since nobody try to make a new propeller the Gowanus Canal starts to get dirtier and dirtier and the water starts affecting people now..
Is anything being done to fix the Gowanus Canal?
The Gowanus canal is currently being fixed. One way how it's being fixed is the  infrastructural problem the federal clean water act.another good way to clean the gowanus canal is to get on big pipe that leads to all of the dirty water so the gowanus canal dirty water can go into the pipe and leads to the dirty waters so all of the fish can stop dieing.but that's not the only reason  it's affecting the community  the Gowanus canal can not only kill you if you jump in it you can also die if you smell it.. if we fixed this problem it would be to drain all of the dirty water out the canal and put some clean water in it so people can be able to take picture and take a good look at freshwater cause people dont want want to take a picture of dirty water green water
