Welcome!

We are a group of 8th graders from Brooklyn Collaborative School (BCS), located in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, NY. We have just completed an Investigative Journalism Unit utilizing an area of our community as the focus. Students visited the Gowanus Canal, a polluted waterway blocks away from our school. Through observation, interviews, and research, students have created investigative news stories uncovering issues surrounding the Gowanus Canal. Each student investigated a different angle, either focusing on the environment, development, or the arts. These are their stories...

Graffiti Has Been Around Since Forever
Can you imagine the types of graffiti everywhere on buildings, the floors, walls, and other places to spray paint on. Graffiti that is illegal in NYC and is also a problem because it's basically art that is shows up on the wall for everyone to see. It could just show you something that you never realized before, but since it's illegal in some places, the walls only will look dull. Since people thought it was vandalism, they would repaint over the graffiti with just one ordinary color. But people who draw/spray paint on these walls are very good at what they do as artist. They pick an ordinary wall that's clean and has nothing on it. Then, they just quickly start drawing/spray painting. You can smell the strong scent of paint as you walk near it, or even a block away from it. The sound of the spray paint makes a hissing sound as it flies into the air and then on to the wall making a nice color for people to see a beautiful masterpiece. The artists are showing who they are as people. And to other people they see that artist showing something about themselves.
How Graffiti Is Art To Many People
Graffiti is illegal in some places, but isn't it art when you see it? Graffiti is showing the public an art show, but many people just think it's vandalism which is very expensive, vandalism is when action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private property. Graffiti is showing art to many people, and all those people see it when they walk past the wall the creator spray painted on. The creators that I've noticed are “cornbread” and “taki183” and they both create their art by just writing their tag names. Graffiti is art that is in public places so others can experience it too. When people look at it, they don't always know what it means. But just like drawing and painting, the wall is a canvas.
Good vs. Bad
Graffiti has positive and negative effects. One positive effect is that graffiti is art; it's a decoration on the wall. One eyewitness has said “I think graffiti should be legal because people should be free to draw whatever comes to mind so others can get inspired by it to do the same.” For example people out in the streets could draw whatever is inspirational for people so they can be inspired by it. This would benefit the community because art is a good and inspiring hobby that people do for a living. One negative effect is that people think that graffiti is vandalism. One eye witness has said that graffiti is vandalism because some people do graffiti just to be mean and rude. For example, people on the streets say they see artists spray painting on the walls just for fun. So people call it vandalism, and it makes some places around the world make graffiti illegal. Graffiti would harm the community because people would get the wrong idea. Graffiti maybe art but it also defaces public property. People think it's vandalism, Making the creator go to jail for a crime that isn't very dangerous.
Why Legalized Graffiti?
Graffiti is a type of art where it should be legal for everyone. Making graffiti legal helps people since it helps people be free to draw on the wall. People have said that graffiti should be legal because people should be free to speak freely by drawing and showing a meaning to the people who look at it. For example people do this type of art for a reason to have some meaning in life for people to learn about it and maybe do the same to show this meaning to different people who never knew about it. If more people would know more about graffiti. The graffiti could be legal in different places. If many people pay attention to this situation then we could get people to know that graffiti should be legal and that it isn't vandalism and it's just what some people do if they want to have a place to show who they are as a person.
