Welcome!

We are a group of 8th graders from Brooklyn Collaborative School (BCS), located in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, NY. We have just completed an Investigative Journalism Unit utilizing an area of our community as the focus. Students visited the Gowanus Canal, a polluted waterway blocks away from our school. Through observation, interviews, and research, students have created investigative news stories uncovering issues surrounding the Gowanus Canal. Each student investigated a different angle, either focusing on the environment, development, or the arts. These are their stories...

Graffiti Helps The Community

Graffiti is happening all over New York City. Graffiti started since 1967 , it was mostly drawn on trains or put their tags on streets. Every time the train would pass the artist would see their drawing. A Graffiti artist named “CES53” started drawing since he was a kid, later on he became an amazing Graffiti artist.

Graffiti is a type of art that people do in the streets. There are different types of Graffiti such as “Bombing” which means writers who are aiming to tag as many places as possible. There is also “Burning” which means an artistic centerpiece. Graffiti can be found in so many places such as old places, walls, streets and vehicles. Graffiti is illegal because the law does not distinguished between a rembrandt caliber painting and an international act of vandalism. Vandalism is when an action action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private property. People do Graffiti because they want to to show others how they feel in the inside. Some people think that Graffiti is a good thing because they want to see art and how others like to express themselves.
Graffiti has positive and negative effects. One positive effect is it makes the community look more artistic, it makes the streets look more better instead of just boring painted walls. One eyewitness has said/ gothamist.com “We’ve seen a significant rising trend of arts.” This would benefit the community because it makes the place more decorative and others like the graffiti on the streets. One negative effect is that sometimes graffiti is drawn on public properties like hotels, restaurants, stores, etc. One eyewitness has said, “it doesn’t seem good the people are drawing on public places, it makes the city look abandoned.” This would harm the community because sometimes graffiti is drawn on public and people don’t like it, this can cause arrest and going to jail.
If people created a place where graffiti was allowed then people wouldn't draw on public spaces. It would catch others attention because all the art is in one place also it may not make the cities look dirty. Another way illegal graffiti would be solved is by asking permission instead of just drawing, that way people would be able to draw what they want without getting into trouble.
